Sometimes you only have a moment: a pause before a phone call, a line for a card, a few seconds at a bedside before the nurse comes in. A short prayer for healing and recovery for someone fits that moment. The twenty above are written to be said in one breath, remembered by heart or sent by text.

Why a short prayer is enough

People in pain or in the middle of treatment rarely have the energy for long words. Neither do the people who love them. A short prayer is easier to say again, which matters because most healing takes a long time. It is also easier to carry: you can say a single sentence at a red light, in the waiting room or during a sleepless hour.

Scripture backs this up. Jesus told his followers not to heap up empty phrases (Matthew 6:7). The prayers people remember from the Gospels are short: “Lord, save me.” “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” “I believe; help my unbelief.” Each was heard.

Write your own in four lines

Prayers from a book are a gift, and a prayer in your own voice is better still. A short prayer can follow this pattern:

  1. Address God. “Lord,” “Father,” “Jesus,” “God of all comfort.”
  2. Name the person and the need. “Mark’s knee is healing after surgery.”
  3. Ask. “Mend it. Ease the pain. Give him patience.”
  4. Close. “Thank you. Amen.”
“Lord, Mark’s knee is healing after surgery. Mend what is broken, ease the pain, and give him patience for the long weeks. Thank you for his doctors. Amen.”

That took ten seconds, and it is a real prayer. Another example for a child: “Jesus, Amelia has a fever tonight. Cool it, bring her sleep, and let her wake up better. Amen.”

A breath prayer for hard hours

Christians have long paired a short phrase with breathing. Breathe in on the first half, out on the second, and repeat. It works well when you’re anxious and can’t focus on a longer prayer. Some phrases to try:

  • In: “Lord Jesus Christ” / Out: “heal your servant.”
  • In: “Be still” / Out: “and know that I am God.”
  • In: “You are with me” / Out: “I will not fear.”
  • In: “Heal me, Lord” / Out: “and I will be healed.”

The Orthodox tradition has prayed the Jesus Prayer this way for more than a thousand years. You’ll find it in the healing prayer library.

Where to use a short prayer

  • In a text. Tap “Send as a text.” Add a line of your own at the top.
  • In a get-well card. Write it by hand, sign it, and add a date.
  • On a sticky note. Put it on a mirror, a fridge or a hospital tray table.
  • At a bedside. Say it slowly, with permission, in a low voice.
  • Before treatment. Chemotherapy, scans, physical therapy and dressing changes all go a little easier with a quiet word first.
  • As a printed card. Choose one and print it to tuck in a Bible or a purse.

Praying through recovery

The first days after surgery, an accident or an illness are full of attention. The long middle isn’t. Recovery is often slow and uneven, and a person can feel forgotten when the flowers fade. A short prayer each morning for someone you know is recovering can be a quiet commitment, and a quick text a week later may mean more than the first visit.

If the person is in the hospital, see prayers for someone in the hospital. If you’re writing to a friend, healing prayers for a friend has longer options. And if you’re about to visit, the pastoral care guide covers what to say once you’re in the room.

One-line Scripture

If you’d rather send a verse, these are short and work well on their own:

“Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.”
Psalm 30:2, World English Bible
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
Psalm 56:3, King James Version

Many more, grouped by need, are on Bible verses for healing and strength.

Common questions

What is a short prayer for healing and recovery for someone?

“Lord, heal and restore. Touch what is hurting, strengthen what is weak, and bring this person back to full health. Amen.” Two sentences like this can be prayed at a bedside, written in a card or sent in a text. The list above has twenty of them, each under 45 words.

Is a short prayer as effective as a long one?

Scripture suggests that length is not what matters. Jesus warned against piling up words (Matthew 6:7), and some of the Bible’s most memorable prayers are a sentence long: “Lord, save me,” “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean,” “Help my unbelief.” God hears the heart.

What do I write in a card for someone recovering?

Try: “Praying that God surrounds you with comfort, heals what hurts and gives you strength for every day of your recovery.” Add a line in your own voice, such as a memory or an offer to help. A handwritten sentence from you means more than a printed verse alone.

Can I use a short prayer for someone who isn’t religious?

Use your judgment. If you’re unsure, say what you might privately pray: “I’m hoping for your quick recovery and thinking of you every day.” A friend who is open to prayer will say so. When in doubt, keep the prayer for your own quiet time.

How can I help someone recover besides praying?

Bring food, offer rides, run errands, send a note each week, and keep checking in after the first flurry of visitors fades. Recovery is often lonelier in week four than week one. Prayer and practical help belong together.

What is a good prayer after surgery?

“Thank you, God, for bringing them through. Now help the body mend, ease the pain, and speed the recovery. Amen.” For longer prayers about the operating room, see our page on prayer for someone in the hospital.
