For a friend with a diagnosis

    Original prayer for pastor.care

Lord, my friend heard hard news this week, and I want to carry some of it for them. I can't, so I bring it to you.

Give them clear thoughts and a good medical team. Give them courage that comes in daily portions. Keep fear from getting the last word. Send people to stand beside them: someone to drive, someone to cook, someone to sit in silence.

Help me to be that kind of friend. Help me not to disappear when it gets uncomfortable. And Lord, please heal them. Amen.

  6. Any Christian traditionMedium · 53 words

    For a friend facing surgery

    Original prayer for pastor.care

Father, my friend goes in for surgery soon. Steady their heart tonight, and give them sleep. Guide the surgeon's hands tomorrow, and bring them safely through. In the recovery, be gentle. Give them patience, comfort and good company.

I will be waiting and praying, so let them know they are not alone. Amen.

  7. Any Christian traditionLong · 91 words

For a friend who has lost hope

    Original prayer for pastor.care

God, my friend is tired. The hope they used to carry so easily has worn thin, and they can't pray right now. So I'm praying for them.

Meet them where they are, not where they think they should be. Send them a small sign today, such as a kind word, a bit of sun or a good meal, that tells them they have not been forgotten. Hold the hope for them until their hands can hold it again.

And let me be a window, not a wall, when I visit. Amen.

  8. Any Christian traditionMedium · 65 words

When you don't know what to pray for your friend

    Original prayer for pastor.care

Lord, I don't even know what to ask for. I want my friend to be well, but I can't tell you how. So I'll simply name them: (say their name). You know what they need better than I do.

Give them whatever it is. Give me whatever I need to help. And when I run out of words, let my love say the rest. Amen.

For a friend you can't visit

    Original prayer for pastor.care

Lord, there are miles between my friend and me, and I wish I could hand them a hot meal and sit by their side. Since I can't, please be my hands and my voice. Be at their door when the day is long. Remind them that they are on many hearts, and let this prayer go ahead of any message I send. Amen.

When a friend is sick, you want to do something, and often there’s nothing you can fix. A healing prayer for a friend is something you can do right now. It asks God for what you can’t give, and when you send it, it tells your friend that someone is holding them up. The prayers above are ready to use: copy, text, or pray them aloud.

What makes a good prayer for a friend

The best prayers for a friend share a few qualities:

  • They’re specific. “For the biopsy on Thursday” does more than “for healing.”
  • They’re short. A sick person is tired. Three sentences will be read; three paragraphs may not be.
  • They ask, and they don’t promise. “Please heal her” is a prayer. “She’ll be fine” is a guess.
  • They’re warm. Your friend should hear you in it. Change a word, add a nickname, mention something you share.
  • They don’t demand a response. Say so: “No need to reply.”

How to send a prayer by text

Press Send as a text under any prayer, and your messages app opens with the prayer already typed. Pick your friend, add a line at the top, and send. Some openers that work:

  • “Thinking of you this morning. I wanted to share this prayer.”
  • “I’m praying for you, and this is what I’m asking God for:”
  • “You don’t have to reply. I just want you to know you’re on my heart.”

If your friend isn’t religious, soften the opener: “I’m thinking of you and sending you the kind of wish my faith turns into a prayer.” They’ll hear the love.

When you don’t know what to say

Many people avoid sick friends because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. That silence hurts more than clumsy words. Start with something small: “I heard, and I’m so sorry. I’m praying for you. Can I bring dinner on Wednesday?” You don’t need a speech. If you want a ready-made line, try the short prayers for healing and recovery.

Praying with your friend

If your friend welcomes it, praying together can be the most meaningful part of a visit or call. Keep it simple:

  1. Ask: “Would it be all right if I prayed for you before I go?”
  2. Hold their hand or stay at a respectful distance, whichever they prefer.
  3. Speak slowly. Use their name. Name the specific things you’ve heard them worry about.
  4. End with “Amen.” Then stay quiet for a moment before you speak again.

If your friend is in hospital, our guide to prayer for someone in the hospital has bedside prayers, and the pastoral care guide covers what to do when you’re the one at the door.

Showing up beyond prayer

Prayer is where care starts, and it shouldn’t be where it ends. Some practical ways to love a sick friend:

  • Drive them to an appointment, and sit in the waiting room.
  • Bring a meal in a container they never have to return.
  • Look after their children or pets for an afternoon.
  • Send a short note once a week for the length of their treatment.
  • Offer a specific time (“Saturday at ten”) rather than an open “let me know.”
  • Check in after the first rush of attention fades. That is when it gets lonely.

A friend who isn’t religious

You can pray for anyone. Whether to tell them is a judgment call. A good guide: if they’ve said they find prayer meaningful, or they’ve asked, share it. If they haven’t, say “I’m thinking of you and hoping for the best,” and keep the prayer to yourself. Never use a friend’s illness to push belief. Love without conditions is the best witness.

Scripture for a card

A line from Scripture can sit well in a card or message. Two short ones:

“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you.”
Isaiah 41:10, World English Bible
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1, World English Bible

Common questions

What is a good healing prayer for a friend?

“Lord, you know my friend’s name and everything they’re facing. Heal them, comfort them, and let them feel you near. Amen.” Short and sincere is better than long and formal. Add their name and one specific thing, such as the surgery date or the diagnosis, and it becomes your own prayer.

How do I tell a friend I’m praying for them?

Say it simply and without pressure: “I’m praying for you today. No need to reply.” A text, a card or a voicemail all work. You can add one line of specifics, such as “I’m praying that the scan goes smoothly on Thursday.” Avoid long theological messages; a sick person has little energy for them.

Should I ask before I pray with a friend?

Yes. A quick “Would it be all right if I prayed with you?” respects their wishes. If they’re religious, they’ll probably be grateful. If they’re not sure, give them an easy out: “No pressure either way.” Praying privately for them is always welcome.

What if I don’t know what to pray?

Say their name and tell God you don’t know what to ask. Our prayer for when you don’t know what to pray for your friend does just that. God knows what they need, and your care is part of the answer.

Can I pray for a friend over the phone or video?

Yes, and many friends say it was the most meaningful part of the call. Ask first, keep the prayer to 30 or 60 seconds, and use plain words. If they want to add something, leave space. The prayer for friends praying together above is written for a call.

What if my friend’s illness doesn’t get better?

Keep praying, and keep showing up. Change what you ask for as the situation changes: comfort, peace, time with family. Friendship is a form of prayer. Stay in touch, and don’t let the silence grow because you’re unsure what to say.
